I've been craving audio stimulus recently to keep myself motivated to do anything other than sit on the couch and bingewatch YouTube channels. I'm working my way through the Night Vale novel audiobook but I'll finish that eventually.

I've seen a lot of chatter about The Adventure Zone, but before I dive in I thought I'd check: is there anything I should know before I start? (Warnings, background information, anything.)

Also, for people who know me well, would I like it?

I think The Adventure Zone is super great. It does have a VERY rough start, the first few episodes are like about 80% goofing around & off-topic chatter and 20% story/roleplay -- even the McElroys themselves talk about how it's kind of embarrassing and how they've see people rec TAZ to their friends as this deeply amazing character-driven fantasy drama and then their friends listen to two and a half episodes and are like "um, this is mostly jokes about boners????"

But once everyone does settle into their characters and start roleplaying seriously it gets really good. It took me a while to accept that in their version of D&D, a funny comedy riff (that may not have anything to do with the story) is equally as important as a good character moment or moving the story forward, but on the other hand I've tried listening to other real play podcasts and just end up getting super bored, so your mileage may vary.

There is one story arc that ends with dead lesbians, which Griffin the DM apologized for as he hadn't previously known that was a thing, and one of the main characters has a pretty standard/cliched Dead Wife For Motivation backstory, but on the whole the McElroys explicitly have stated a bunch of times, "hey, we don't want to hurt or exclude our audience with our comedy podcast(s) and if we do, we acknowledge it & apologize and actively try to do better." Personally, I find their collective sense of humor really refreshing -- they are definitely super juvenile and kind of boyish and tease each other a lot as family, but completely without all the slurs and grossness and "ironic racism" and yucky misogyny and "lol sexual harrassment is funny" that usually comes with that kind of setup. Like, almost literally the answer to all the people who are like "ughhh if we have to be all PC then how will we ever tell JOKES." Well, the McElroys are doing ok. :)

I've actually found myself (through Griffin & Justin) watching a lot of content from the video game website they work at, Polygon, just because there's a lot of cool women who work there and also being cool and nice seems to be the company culture, so even if it's a Let's Play that's all dudes, I never have to worry that they're going to suddenly start calling each other bitches or trying to look down Lara Croft's shirt or whatever.

WELP and literally in the last 24 hours there have been sexual harrassment complaints against one of my up-till-now favorite Polygon guys, Nick Robinson. Apparently he was pressuring women for nude pictures, and possibly worse, there aren't a lot of detais but he's already suspended from Polygon pending an investigation, and Griffin has tweeted "So, I’m at a loss for words about the events of the last day. I’m shocked, and angry and so deeply, deeply sad about it all." .... So wow. I almost even recommended one of his & Griffin's videos in the previous comment. That would've been super funny. I feel so bad for all the wee baby tumblr polygon fans who became fans of Nick through his McElroy connection, this must be awful for them... for me it's just like, oh yeah, this is why I prefer being a fan of fictional people instead of real people, because sometimes it turns out they're awful. :/

Liviapenn covered pretty much everything.

"Episode 1.5" is a version of Episode 1 with some of the boring D&D character generation bits cut out.

The current episode is heading up to the finale and SO not worth spoiling yourself with. It's pretty amazing though, there was a section of exposition heavy episodes which dragged a little but now everything is coming together and it's engaging and touching and funny and ahhh. I had to flail at a friend for a while about all my FEELINGS.

There's some cute animatics of not too spoilery scenes around. This scene is from one of the very early episodes and gives some idea of the humour. The characters start out a bit shallow but get rounded and really likeable as the story goes on.

EDIT: As to whether you in particular would like it...maybe? It doesn't have FOR FLAMBYRD written all over it but is very good for what it is and doesn't have NOT FOR FLAMEBYRD on it anywhere I can see.
