On this day in 2006...

...I set foot in Canada for the first time.

We flew into Vancouver, and eventually hit Calgary, Toronto and Montreal before flying on to London (England).

I was struck by the beauty of the mountains and how you could see them from everywhere.

I had no idea that I would ever be living here.

I was 24. I was working as a SharePoint/ASP.NET developer for the same university I'd studied at.

(I was still playing WoW. I was still watching anime. I'd just encountered Ouran High School Host Club for the first time. I was working on Kite and an untitled story about a vampire detective.)

I was pretty sure I'd marry the guy I was with someday, but we were still over a year away from being engaged.

3 years and 1 day later, we arrived here on a working holiday visa. I had a 1 year leave of absence from my job. We figured we'd stay a couple of years and then head back.

I love this city, and I'm going to miss it.

Moving, and especially moving countries, is such a strange headspace to exist in.

Yeah. Somehow it seems like a bigger task this time! Possibly because we have to ship stuff back this time. (But also, emotionally, it's not setting out on a great adventure, it's just... coming home.)

Sorry to have missed you this trip -- Vancouver Island was the closest I got, and I wasn't in the driver's seat. ^^;

That's too bad! There would have been a nice synchronicity there too. But yeah, sadly Vancouver Island is not convenient for visits to Vancouver the City.

I hope you enjoyed it, though! It's gorgeous (the bits I've seen).
