flamebyrd: (full moon)

This podcast was recommended by [personal profile] auroracloud on the friending meme, and I was excited to check it out because I love lighthouses and it promised to be strange and thoughtful, so I was expecting something a bit like Tides.

In short, I enjoyed it, but it's more like Night Vale than Tides because it's unsettling and things are largely left unexplained. Also, a la this Tumblr post I came across while browsing for fan content, it has queer representation!

Spoilers follow.

Somewhere around episode 1.08 the rising tension and creepiness was getting to me, so I decided to read some reviews to get a feel for the tone going forward. This also led me to the TV Tropes page, which I decided to read and not click on any spoiler tags.

Noodle Incident: How Peri's brother, _____ became missing is something of a mystery. Besides it having something to do with the Eldritch Location trope and that, whatever it was, something in it was "calling him home"
Me: That's weird, Peri's brother's name isn't a spoiler.
Me: *clicks*
Me: ...Benny?

I then remembered that the podcast has a complete set of transcripts so I decided to abandon the search and just read the thing.

Me: Benny remembers his family and he has multiple siblings, so how can he be...
Me: When is this reveal coming, because so far it isn't making any sense at all...
Final episode of Season 2: *Ends*
Me: ...Benny is not Peri's brother, WTF?

So I ended the podcast more confused than anything, and it was not even the podcast's fault.

TV Tropes possibly-fake spoilers aside, I enjoyed it, and I think I will go back and listen to the rest of the episodes now that I know where things are going. It has some nice, complex relationships between characters, creative strangeness, and the finale was really neat. I'm looking forward to Season 3!
