Since I outed myself as a Sonic... fan*? in my Twitch.tv post I now feel obliged to have an opinion on that Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer.
That character design is definitely on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. I can understand why they didn't want to go with the sort of "2D design, only inflated like a balloon" treatment that previous 3D Sonic installments have had, however, this furriness is also not reminiscent to me of an actual hedgehog. So... Although, objectively, aside from the teeth the character design is kind of cute?
The actual trailer gives me the same thoughts that the Detective Pikachu trailer did - not actually bad, but a vibe like the movie studio is really embarrassed to be making a retro video-game movie and want to reassure me that, no, no, this one will be cool, we promise!
* Can one really call oneself a fan of a game franchise when one hasn't played a game in it since the 2nd installment from 1992? But certainly if you asked me to choose between Mario and Sonic I would choose Sonic.
