I hadn't listened to this since July 2018 - I decided to wait until it was complete before continuing because active canons are very frustrating for me. But it's finished now! So here I go.
Spoilers through episode 19.
- Travis is doing the Dead Mom thing, I see. That said, from earlier TTAZZ episodes I know he's drawing on personal experience when he gives his characters these backgrounds and associated feelings. Aubrey is very cute and sweet but she's a little bland. (But also, exactly the kind of character I'd create, because as I said the other day, sometimes I relate to Travis in strange ways.)
- I love Duck Newton and his ridiculous nickname and inability to lie and staunch insistence on forest safety and also not letting scared-looking goatmen die at his hands.
- Ned continues to be an interesting character, not really a good person (but he wishes he was) and too full of deflections and self-interest to really relate to another person properly. I'm not sure I like him exactly, but he's intriguing.
- I'd been concerned that Agent Stern was going to be an ongoing unpleasant thorn in their sides, which I wouldn't have enjoyed at all, but he was pretty quiet in this arc.
- I knew fandom had really latched onto Indrid Cold based on the occasional foray onto AO3, and now that I've listened to this arc I kinda get it! He's a compelling character, and I enjoyed the kind of mid-Atlantic accent Griffin gave him. Definitely one of the most interesting Sylvain exiles we've met so far.
- I don't have a lot to say about the Abomination for this arc. It was an interesting idea, for sure. I felt like it could have done more to defend itself via bad luck in the final confrontation, but I suppose it was busy causing a massive sinkhole in Kepler...
- Did Duck grow up in Kepler? He clearly has a long history with Juno so it seems likely. But where are his parents?
- For some reason I had the impression that Minerva was unfamiliar with the Abominations, the Pine Guard and Sylvain, and that whatever Duck's destiny was, it was unrelated to the main plot of Amnesty. Episode 19 soundly trounced that idea, and to be honest I'm a little disappointed. Also, when Minerva told Duck she'd be out of contact, Duck instantly assumed this meant he'd lose all his abilities, which indicates to me that Griffin and Justin had definitely talked about this development before (which makes total sense).
- Not looking forward to Ned's confrontation with his past at all. I'm actively dreading when the truth about his connection to Aubrey's past comes out. D:
