On being available for conversation.
Mar. 22nd, 2020 06:03 pmI keep thinking I should say something about my availability for online voice conversations for anybody feeling they need human contact during self-isolation (very available), then remembering I'm not very good at initiating communication, I barely chat to people online to begin with, and as soon as the conversation turns to emotional topics I freeze up.
Aside: We were listening to 99% Invisible's The ELIZA Effect today, which is about the original ELIZA bot and AI in general, and I related to my spouse the tale of being given an ELIZA bot (written in Gofer) to play with in first year uni and getting through about three exchanges before she asked me about my feelings and I had to stop*.
Anyway, so I am very willing to do voice calls, as long as you're okay with me just babbling about whatever Wikipedia page I've read recently, or my current AO3-related personal web project, or watercolour pigments, or unusual facts about songs, or my favourite disused English word construction form... I'm Flamebyrd#3354 on Discord.
Bonus, if you're up in the middle of the night and want a distraction, my timezone is UTC+8 so I'm awake for typical European and North American sleeping hours.
*Edit: On reflection, this is particularly funny because the point of the ELIZA story is that people found themselves compelled to connect with the bot and share intimate details of their lives, whereas I found the complete opposite.
